Welcome to Texas Irish Wolfhounds. I am Irish Wolfhound breeder located in Lake Jackson Texas; about 45 minutes south of Houston. I have been breeding wolfhounds for the last 8 years and I can’t get enough of these magnificent giants. Wolfhounds are simply amazing, they are strong and powerful yet very gentle; there bark sounds fierce and deep but they rather lick your face off.

The Irish Wolfhound

The name originates from its purpose (wolf hunting) their name derives from that of the earliest bohemian tribes from central Europe.

Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest dog breed on average

The most distinguishing physical feature of the Irish Wolfhound is its great size. Built like a very muscular greyhound, the Irish wolfhound male can attain the stature of a small pony. Its large, long head tapers to a medium point and is held high. Ears are small and stay close to the head except during moments of intensity. Strong shoulders, a muscular neck, a deep chest and a retracted abdomen give the dog its characteristic body shape. Paws are large and round. The tail is carried between the legs, curving slightly upward. The coat is rough, shaggy, wiry and especially bushy over the eyes and under the jaw. The Irish Wolfhound is graceful with an easy yet powerful gait. Historically these dogs had to possess not only speed, but also endurance, allowing them to follow their prey and hunt it down. They had to be hearty enough to withstand being injured whilst using their own brute force to bring the prey down.

Temperament

Irish Wolfhounds are sweet-tempered, patient, kind, thoughtful and very intelligent. Excellent and can be trusted with children. Willing and eager to please, they are unconditionally loyal to their owner and family. They tend to greet everyone as a friend, so do not count on them being a watch dog, but may be a deterrent simply due to his size. This giant breed can be clumsy and are slow to mature in both body and mind, taking about two years before they are full grown.
